GUGAK

Jeongak Ajaeng

Ajaeng, large Korean bowed zither having seven strings for Sanjo Ajaeng, eight strings for Jeongak Ajaeng. Its body is made of paulownia wood. The ajaeng’s strings, made of twisted silk, are supported by separate movable bridges. The bow with which it is played is fashioned from a peeled forsythia branch that has been hardened with pine resin. The instrument, which is placed in a transverse position on the floor, is supported on its bowed end by a stand. Jeongak Ajaeng is usually used for Korean traditional court music in large ensemble, and Sanjo Ajaeng, on the other hand, is usually used for accompaniment for Sanjo, folk song, and dance. What important on this instrument in Korean music is that this is the only one that creates kind of a continuant sound in lower range.
